‘Tis the Season

No, not that season. I wish.

But, I will concede that in addition to the chance to wear  comfortable and easy footwear, summer does afford a few other bright spots that make the Heat endurable.

Peaches from Chilton County, Alabama, are the first to come to mind.

The first ones of the season often need a little extra time in a brown paper bag to ripen to the stage where they give under slight pressure from your thumb. But now, in the height of summer, the peaches are ready before you are. I like to eat one a day, sometimes two. Peaches (and tomatoes) are the taste of summer to me. The fuzzy exterior used to disturb me, but now I embrace it. Breaking that skin and sinking my teeth into the juicy, sweet/tart, honey-esque meat is a joy to savor.
